CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes
Teagan was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes just three days before her 16th birthday, a diagnosis that came as a complete shock. Already living with celiac disease and hypothyroidism, she did not expect routine bloodwork to lead to a life-changing diagnosis. Being in grade 10 at the time, adjusting to finger pricks, insulin, and managing diabetes at school was overwhelming, and she initially hid her diagnosis out of fear of being treated differently. Despite spending time in the hospital recovering from DKA, Teagan refused to let diabetes slow her down and returned to competitive volleyball only days after her diagnosis.
Since then, Teagan has never let diabetes stop her from doing what she loves. She remains extremely active, playing sports, running, and now training for her first half-marathon. Managing daily highs and lows while balancing school, work, sports, and social life is exhausting, but she continues to show resilience. Using diabetes devices has helped restore her confidence and independence. Living with multiple autoimmune conditions has taught Teagan that illness does not define her strength. She is now passionate about breaking stigma, supporting others with diabetes, and showing that type 1 diabetes is invisible but powerful—and that it does not limit a full, meaningful life.
