CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes
Ingrid was diagnosed with diabetes at 58 after a routine doctor’s visit unexpectedly revealed a dangerously high blood sugar level. With little explanation or support, she was sent home overwhelmed and confused. She quickly changed doctors and was referred to an endocrinologist and a diabetes nurse, where she finally received proper care. What was first believed to be type 2 diabetes was later confirmed as type 1, helping her understand the seriousness of her condition.
Initially, Ingrid struggled to fully grasp how demanding type 1 diabetes would be. Diagnosed later in life, she tried to continue living as she always had, responding mainly to highs or lows. Over time, she realized diabetes requires constant planning—adjusting for activity, carrying sugar everywhere, and mentally calculating each day. Even with preparation, unexpected lows still happen and can be frightening.
Ingrid has faced stigma and misunderstanding from family, employers, and even within healthcare settings. Some blamed her diagnosis on lifestyle choices, despite type 1 diabetes being an autoimmune disease. Managing diabetes alongside celiac disease and hypothyroidism added further challenges. Through persistence, Ingrid learned to advocate for herself and trust her knowledge of her body.
Her management has evolved from multiple daily injections to advanced diabetes devices, significantly improving how she feels and lives. Guided by the Girl Guide motto “Be Prepared,” Ingrid openly manages her diabetes, speaks up about her needs, and encourages education and awareness.
A proud grandmother and active volunteer, Ingrid leads a full life—hiking, camping, attending aquasize classes, and supporting many organizations, including Diabetes Canada. Despite major surgeries and chronic conditions, she continues to adapt so she can live fully.
Ingrid is modeling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to raise awareness, challenge stigma, and show that diabetes does not define limits—at any age.
