CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes

Nate was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was just 9 years old. He remembers feeling scared, but he also remembers something just as powerful: he was surrounded by support. Nate’s father, Dave, and grandfather, Robert, were already living with diabetes, and they helped guide him through the early days of learning what this diagnosis would mean. His mom, Barb, also played a huge role, becoming a diabetes educator and helping Nate and their family build confidence in managing diabetes as a team.

Today, Nate’s life is full, active, and constantly in motion. As an elementary Phys Ed teacher and coach, no two days are ever the same, and that unpredictability can make diabetes management challenging. Staying aware of highs and lows, knowing how to treat them quickly, and making decisions on the go is part of his everyday routine — especially when he’s focused on helping kids learn, move, and thrive.

Nate shares that using an insulin pump and a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM) has dramatically improved his quality of life. Having his blood glucose information connected to his phone has made it easier to stay in range, respond faster, and feel more confident while doing what he loves.

Nate is modelling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show because he wants to help raise awareness and show that with the right tools, education, and support, people living with diabetes can live fully and manage well. He believes strongly in promoting proper diabetes management, and he’s proud to be part of changing the conversation around what living with diabetes really looks like.

Outside of work and advocacy, Nate’s proudest role is at home. He is married to his loving wife, Shanis, and is the proud dad of two boys, Wes and Rhodes — the people who inspire him every day.

Nate is walking the runway to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and support D-Camps so more kids living with diabetes can feel empowered, connected, and understood.
