CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes
Lily was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) on June 5, 2023. At first, she worried about what she might lose. She wondered if diabetes would mean no more ringette, no more swimming, and fewer sweet treats. But Lily quickly learned that T1D wasn’t going to stop her from being who she is.
Diabetes does require constant decision making, and Lily sometimes struggles with remembering to enter carbs at the right time. When blood sugar is high, her mood can shift, and those feelings can make her even harder on herself. Still, Lily’s world is filled with support. Her peers are kind, and she often teaches others about diabetes when questions come up. When her devices alarm at school, she has even taken the lead in educating substitute teachers who see it as a disruption.
Lily has become an advocate, speaking at diabetes events and even sharing her experience with medical students. She loves ringette and has learned how to manage diabetes so she can stay in the game.
Camp has been a turning point for Lily. She met her first diabestie early on, and now she loves being in a place where alarms go off and no one stares. She feels safe, supported, and proud of who she is.
