CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes

Monica was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in November 1990. When she returned to school, her classmates surprised her with a welcome-back package, a moment that reassured her she was going to be OK. That early show of support stayed with her and helped shape her outlook.

Living with diabetes has brought ongoing challenges, from diabetes devices beeping at inconvenient times to dealing with scar tissue at sites. Over the years, diabetes has shaped both Monica and those around her, teaching her resilience and adaptability. She believes the biggest risk in life is not taking one and encourages others to explore the world and live fully.

What makes Monica’s journey especially unique is receiving a kidney transplant in 2024. This milestone deepened her appreciation for life and reinforced the importance of connection, something she values deeply. She loves being near water and spending time with people.

If Monica could share one message with someone newly diagnosed, it would be simple: You will be OK.

Some of her most cherished memories come from D-Camp—dyeing her hair with Kool-Aid, endless sing-along songs, polar bear swims, the smell of the cabins, and feeling safe, connected, and inspired by everyone around her.

Monica is modelling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to raise awareness and show that diabetes may shape you, but it does not define you.
