CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes
Madison was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) on November 16th, 2008, when she was just three years old. Because she was so young, she does not remember life before diabetes—managing it has simply always been part of her world. Her biggest challenges have often been the day‑to‑day realities of managing high and low blood sugars and the extra work that comes with staying in range. Even with experience, the routine of monitoring, dosing, and making constant decisions can be exhausting, but it has also shaped who she is today.
As Madison grew older, diabetes began influencing her interests in meaningful ways. Her lived experience sparked a strong interest in healthcare and inspired her to pursue a path where she can support others facing similar challenges. Over time, she has learned that while diabetes is demanding, life with it does get easier—especially with the right tools, community, and confidence.
At seven years old, Madison attended D‑Camp, a turning point in her independence. Her camp fees were generously covered by Bret Michaels from the 1980s band Poison, allowing her to experience a community of kids who understood exactly what she was going through. Camp helped her gain confidence, especially when it came to tasks she once found intimidating, like changing pump sites. Surrounded by counselors and friends living with T1D, she realized she was capable of more than she imagined. That sense of connection and empowerment is why she strongly recommends D‑Camp to other kids—it made her feel supported, understood, and proud of herself.
Today, Madison sees diabetes not as something that holds her back, but as something that has shaped her resilience. Her journey has taught her responsibility, patience, and strength, and it continues to inspire her to help others. She hopes her story will encourage kids living with T1D to know that they are capable, they are strong, and they are never alone.
