CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes

Kenna was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in September 2024 at the age of 10. She remembers the early hospital days clearly—the constant finger pokes that left her bruised, painful insulin injections, and how overwhelming everything felt. Adjusting to hospital food, having no snacks, and learning a whole new routine was hard, especially when it brought tears for both her and her mom.

Learning to track what she eats and monitor her blood sugar every day has been a big adjustment. People often worry about her and ask questions, which can make her feel different. Not being able to do things she used to enjoy, like sleepovers, has been especially difficult, but Kenna is determined not to let diabetes change who she is.

Kenna has been riding horses since she was two years old and loves playing hockey on a team made up of almost all boys. Staying active and doing what she loves helps her feel strong and confident. D‑Camp was a turning point for Kenna. Playing Capture the Pump, sitting around campfires, and being surrounded by other kids who understand helped her feel like a normal kid again. Kenna is modeling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to show that diabetes is only part of her story—it does not define her.
