CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes

Evan was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at about two and a half years old, which means he has no real memory of life without it. Diabetes has always been part of his daily routine, and he has grown up managing it every day. One of the biggest changes was not only for Evan, but for his parents, who had to completely adapt their lives to support him. From the very beginning, diabetes shaped how his family lived, planned, and navigated everyday life.

Because Evan has lived with diabetes for so long, it is something he has always carried with him, but that does not make it easy. Blood sugar changes continue to affect many parts of his life, including school, sports, and even sleep. Highs and lows can interrupt concentration, energy levels, and daily plans, and managing them requires constant awareness. Diabetes is always present, even in moments when others may not notice it.

Growing up with diabetes has brought many challenges, especially during childhood. Evan recognizes how much responsibility his parents took on and how they had to learn and adapt alongside him. Their support played a huge role in helping him live a full and active life while managing a condition that never takes a break.

Today, Evan continues to turn his experience into something meaningful. This summer, he is working in diabetes research through the University of Manitoba, contributing to a future where management and outcomes can improve for others living with the condition. Being involved in research allows him to give back to a community he has been part of his entire life.

Evan believes that while diabetes is something you must manage every day, it should not control how you live. His outlook is that you should manage your life around diabetes, but manage the diabetes into your life. He values connecting with others who share similar experiences and learning how they manage their own journeys. Meeting people who truly understand what it is like to live with diabetes provides support, perspective, and inspiration.

Evan is modeling to help raise awareness and show that living with type 1 diabetes does not limit potential. Diabetes may be part of his story, but it does not define who he is or what he can accomplish.
