Leyla

CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes

Leyla was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) at seven years old after weeks of extreme thirst and frequent washroom trips. On Christmas Eve 2023, she fainted during blood work, and later that day her family was told to go to the Children’s Hospital immediately. She remembers being in Emergency when someone brought her a Rainbow High doll, which she still treasures.

Although it wasn’t the Christmas she imagined, Leyla enjoyed the extra attention and gifts. Today she uses a continuous glucose monitor and an insulin pump, which make managing T1D easier but also bring challenges like bruising, rashes, and sites falling off. Carb counting, late-night lows, and constant monitoring are part of everyday life. Her mom tends to hover out of love, something Leyla teases her about—but appreciates. Getting a phone early and sometimes extra snacks were memorable perks along the way.

Despite the challenges, Leyla has grown strong and self‑aware. She isn’t afraid of needles and rarely feels pain. As a dedicated dancer training five days a week across multiple styles, diabetes has helped her become more in tune with her body. She competes regularly and completes Royal Academy of Dance ballet exams each year.

D-Camp has been one of the most meaningful parts of Leyla’s journey. She immediately felt at home and knew she wanted to be a counselor one day. She loves helping younger kids, being a leader, and playing “capture the pump” with her diabuddies.

Leyla dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon when she grows up. T1D is part of her life, but it has never held her back—and it has only made her more resilient, confident, and determined.
