CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes
Mark was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) in 2014 at just two years old, which means he does not remember life without diabetes. From a very young age, diabetes has been part of every aspect of his daily life. One of the biggest challenges he faces is the constant interruption diabetes brings. Whether he is spending time with friends, participating in class, or playing dodgeball, Mark often has to pause what he is doing to check his blood glucose or manage his levels.
Being diagnosed so young also affected Mark socially. As a child, it was sometimes difficult to make friends because he could not easily go to a friend’s house or take part in activities without extra planning and supervision. Diabetes plays a role in every decision he makes, and that responsibility has shaped how he approaches daily life.
Living with T1D has made Mark responsible, cautious, and more aware of his body and personal health. As a teenager, he tries to make healthy choices and enjoys staying physically active because he knows it helps regulate his blood sugar. Mark plays competitive dodgeball in a league and is also the stage manager for his school play, balancing athletics, leadership, and creativity. He also loves going to concerts and spending time doing the things he enjoys.
Mark believes that diabetes does not define who you are and that having a strong support system makes a difference. He hopes his story helps show that while diabetes is part of life, it does not limit what you can achieve.
