CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes
Sydney was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at three years old and grew up knowing her life looked different from other kids’. Over time, diabetes became part of her normal, and today she lives a full and active life, managing her condition without letting it define who she is. While the journey hasn’t been easy, it has shaped her into a stronger and more resilient person.
Sydney has faced emotional burnout and experienced diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), challenges that taught her the importance of expressing her feelings and asking for support. Rather than giving up, she learned to make the best of her struggles. These experiences inspired her to educate others and show that diabetes does not limit what’s possible.
She now works as a special needs assistant and supports children through before- and after-school care in an elementary school. No day is easy, but Sydney believes that with the right support system and friends, anything can be accomplished—even on the hardest days.
One of Sydney’s favourite memories is from D-Camp, where she bonded with other girls making friendship bracelets and hair wraps during her first year. Being placed in the same cabin again the following summer helped her feel connected and supported by “her people.”
Sydney hopes her story encourages others to embrace their challenges and never give up. Diabetes has helped shape her strength and compassion, and she is proud of the person it has helped her become.
