Tetiana Plaskonis

CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes

Tetiana’s world changed in an instant when she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 8 years old — just two days before arriving in Canada from Ukraine. On her very first day in Canada, she was immediately admitted to the hospital. Everything was new at once: a new country, a new life, and a diagnosis she never saw coming.

Since then, one of the hardest parts for Tetiana has been feeling like she’s facing diabetes alone. She doesn’t have friends living with diabetes who truly understand what it feels like, and that lack of connection can be isolating. She hopes that one day there will be a cure, and she holds onto that hope as she continues to navigate something that often feels overwhelming.

Tetiana is honest about the emotional weight diabetes brings. There are nights when it feels heavy, when it feels like a nightmare she wishes would end. And that truth matters — because living with diabetes isn’t always inspiring or easy. Sometimes it’s exhausting, and sometimes it’s lonely.

But Tetiana is more than her diagnosis. She is creative, talented, and full of heart. She loves music, art, and crafts, and she plays both piano and flute. She also sings in choir, which brings her joy and helps her feel like herself.

Tetiana is modelling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to be seen, to be heard, and to help change the conversation around what it really means to live with diabetes. Her story is a reminder that no one should have to feel alone in this journey.

Her message to anyone newly diagnosed is simple, powerful, and true: "You are not alone."
