CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes

Kristen was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) the day before her eleventh birthday. Learning how to give injections, do finger pokes, and plan insulin for every meal was a major change, but her family supported her through every step. They even let her practice her new skills on them during her week in the hospital, helping her adjust with confidence.

Kristen has always been open about living with diabetes so the people around her know how to help if needed. One of her biggest challenges has been managing low blood sugars. When she was first diagnosed more than thirty years ago, staying safe overnight was difficult. In her twenties she stopped waking up during severe lows, and her roommates saved her life after finding her unresponsive. She is deeply grateful for the diabetes devices that now help keep her safe and give her more freedom in her day.

These devices have also reduced the time she spends checking her blood sugar. During her pregnancies she checked up to twenty five times a day, so the change has been significant. She appreciates the flexibility and stability that modern technology provides.

Kristen attended Camp Huronda six months after her diagnosis and found it empowering to meet other kids with diabetes. She earned her around the world badge by giving herself injections in every site, including the one she feared most, which helped build her confidence.

She is especially proud of managing three high risk pregnancies and maintaining strong control throughout. Today she is a mother of three healthy children who mean everything to her.

Kristen is modeling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to raise awareness and help more children experience the support and community of Diabetes Camps.
