CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes
Faith was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) on August 25, 1973. She remembers the moment clearly, especially her mother’s reaction. Her mother also lived with T1D, and Faith sensed she carried guilt, even though diabetes was not anyone’s fault. Faith herself had already suspected something was wrong, recognizing the same symptoms her mother once described—weight loss, constant thirst, and frequent urination.
One of Faith’s biggest ongoing challenges is keeping her blood sugar stable, especially during exercise. Even with a predictable routine, diabetes can still be frustrating and unpredictable. In her early years, staying highly organized and regimented with food and activity was key. Over time, innovations like insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors made diabetes management easier and far more freeing.
Living with T1D influenced Faith’s career choices early on, as she prioritized stable work with health benefits. Outside of work, she loves riding, hiking, gardening, and spending time with her energetic “puppy.” Her personal goal is to stay active and healthy for as long as possible. Faith believes in living fully with diabetes, not for it. She has traveled solo, tried new foods, competed in races, and embraced life’s adventures without letting diabetes hold her back.
Faith also strongly recommends diabetes camp. Spending her teen years at Quebec’s Camp Carowanis helped her gain confidence, push herself physically, and learn how to manage highs and lows alongside others who understood. Those summers remain some of her most positive memories. Faith is modeling to help change the conversation around diabetes and show that it does not define or limit what’s possible.
