CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes
Emerson was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) when he was just 14 months old. His mom brought him to the hospital because he was very sick, but at first they were told it was a virus that simply had to run its course. Deep down, she knew something else was wrong. Even with both of her parents living with diabetes, type 1 diabetes was not the first thing that came to mind. On their second visit back, Emerson was diagnosed.
He remembers a lot of pokes, a lot of people in his room, and his mom crying while holding him and telling him everything was going to be okay. And she was right.
Because Emerson was diagnosed so young, diabetes is all he has really ever known. That perspective gives his story a beautiful kind of confidence. He knows he can do anything a kid without diabetes can do, and yes, that includes eating ice cream.
What has made the biggest difference for Emerson is community support. He is surrounded by friends and family who want to learn, help, and understand what living with T1D really looks like. That support has helped him grow up knowing he is never alone.
Emerson is no stranger to Pump Couture. He has proudly been a model for the past two years and cannot wait to hit the runway again this year. For Emerson, Pump Couture is more than just a fashion show. It is a chance to help raise money for D-Camps, meet so many other kids living with diabetes, and be part of a day that is full of energy, community, and pride.
Even though Emerson has not attended D-Camps yet, he is already looking forward to the day he can. Being surrounded by other kids who understand life with diabetes is something he is excited to experience.
Emerson is modeling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to help raise awareness, support D-Camps, and show that living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) does not hold him back. He brings happiness, courage, and confidence everywhere he goes, and he is proud to be part of changing the conversation.
