CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes
Emma was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) at age thirty eight. After becoming very ill, she began to suspect diabetes was the cause. She was originally diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and it took time and a great deal of advocating to receive the correct diagnosis. The experience was frustrating, but she was relieved to finally understand why she felt so unwell. As a nurse, she used her knowledge to push for proper testing and a treatment plan that would help her feel like herself again.
The most challenging part of diabetes for Emma is that it never takes a day off. She is constantly aware of what she eats and how it affects her body. Her relationship with food has changed, and she finds the emotional impact of high and low blood sugars difficult, especially as a parent. She can become irritable or impatient, and she works hard to manage these moments with care.
Diabetes has also strengthened her commitment to living well. Emma focuses on eating healthy foods, exercising regularly, and getting enough rest. Caring for her body has always been important to her, but now she feels even more motivated. She also encourages the people around her to make healthy choices whenever they can.
Emma is a mom to two beautiful children and has been with her husband for almost twenty five years. Her family is her greatest inspiration as she continues to navigate life with diabetes.
Emma is modeling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to raise awareness and to support Diabetes Camps, which give children with T1D the chance to feel empowered, understood, and supported.
