CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes
Monserrat Moran was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in January of 2022 at nine years old after being rushed to the emergency room in DKA and transported to the IWK by Lifeflight. She remembers feeling extremely thirsty and waiting for answers during a frightening moment that changed her life. Since diagnosis, she has learned that diabetes looks different every day. Some days her numbers stay steady and everything feels manageable, while other days are unpredictable and frustrating. Through it all, she shows up and does her best.
Living with T1D has helped Monserrat become more responsible and aware of her body. She has learned how to manage her diabetes at school, while playing sports, and when spending time with friends. Diabetes has taught her to speak up for herself and pay attention when something feels off, even when she would rather not think about it.
Monserrat’s “Diabestie” is her dad, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as a teenager. Growing up watching him live a full, active life made her feel less afraid when she was diagnosed and confident that diabetes would not hold her back. Diabetes camp has also played a huge role in her journey. She has attended every summer since diagnosis and says it has been one of the best experiences of her life, allowing her to make friends who truly understand living with diabetes. Monserrat is modeling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to show other kids they are not alone and that diabetes does not define them.
