CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes
Melissa was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) at the four years old, a life-altering moment that reshaped her childhood and set the foundation for the resilient woman she is today. From an early age, she learned responsibility, adaptability, and courage, navigating a condition that demands constant awareness, discipline, and strength.
Diabetes is always present, even when it’s invisible to the world. From managing blood sugar levels to preparing for the unexpected, Melissa has learned to balance these daily demands while continuing to live a vibrant, full, and active life.
After more than two decades living with diabetes, Melissa embodies resilience and self-advocacy. The condition has shaped how she listens to her body, makes thoughtful decisions, and advocates for her health and the diabetes community. Diabetes did not limit her; it sharpened her awareness, deepened her empathy, and strengthened her resolve.
Beyond diabetes, Melissa is a passionate foodie who loves exploring Toronto’s diverse restaurant scene and experimenting with new recipes at home (usually with her dog, Bentley, enthusiastically supervising and hoping for taste-test approval).
Melissa proudly embraces visibility. She believes that showing diabetes openly challenges stigma, sparks conversation, and builds understanding. Her participation in events like Pump Couture is deeply meaningful to her, a way to redefine the narrative and prove that diabetes is not something to hide.
By modeling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show, Melissa is sending a powerful message: living with diabetes is not a limitation, it is a testament to strength, confidence, and pride.
