CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes
Aubree was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) on February 26, 2022, when she was 11 years old. At the time, she was a competitive gymnast training 30 hours a week and was also getting involved in hockey. Her diagnosis came as a shock, as it was discovered through a blood test and she thought the way she felt was normal. On the day she was diagnosed, Aubree went to the gym in the morning and had hockey at noon, which she had to leave early to go to the hospital. She remembers feeling confused and overwhelmed, never expecting diabetes to be part of her life.
Living with T1D has changed how Aubree understands and cares for her body. One of her biggest challenges is how unpredictable diabetes can be. Some days feel well‑managed, while others feel like starting over. Factors such as stress, activity, adrenaline, and even sleep can significantly impact her blood sugars.
Socially, diabetes can be isolating. Aubree attends a high school of about 1,100 students and is the only one with T1D. Feeling different, especially when devices beep in class or when others don’t understand her condition, can be challenging. Managing diabetes also meant growing up quickly. By age 12, Aubree was independently managing her care while balancing school and staying active in sports.
Through diabetes, Aubree learned the importance of nutrition and how food fuels her body, especially around sports. She now focuses on balanced meals that support steady blood sugars and consistent energy so she can stay active and have fun doing what she loves.
Three months after her diagnosis, Aubree attended D‑Camp Family Camp, where she found comfort in being surrounded by others living with diabetes. She loved trying new activities like archery, tight rope, and ocean adventures, and is excited to return this summer.
Aubree is modeling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to raise awareness and remind others living with diabetes that they are not alone. She hopes to show that while diabetes is part of life, it does not hold you back.
