CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes
Nora was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) at age seven in 2023. At the time, she didn’t even know what diabetes was. She missed a week of school so she could learn what the diagnosis meant and how to stay alive.
At first, her confidence changed. She avoided wearing T shirts because she didn’t want her medical devices to show. She didn’t want to feel different. Over time, that shifted. Nora found community through Pump Couture and D Camps, and being surrounded by others who live with diabetes helped her feel seen, understood, and more confident in her own skin.
Nora deals with highs and lows at school and during sports. When her blood sugar is out of range, she doesn’t feel like herself and can even get severe migraines. She has also faced rude comments from peers, but her friends, family, and teachers have helped her work through those moments and stay strong.
Nora loves sports and loves proving people wrong when they assume diabetes will hold her back. She plays competitive hockey, flag football, and track and field. One of her proudest moments was winning a banner at hockey provincials after traveling through the night with her family.
Her message is hopeful. It might feel hard right now, but it will get easier. You can still do big things, and diabetes won’t stop you.
