CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes
Karen’s diabetes journey began in September 2017, just before her 40th birthday, when a routine physical revealed elevated blood sugar. After trying dietary changes, she was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in January 2018, a moment that left her devastated. That same week, however, a meet and greet with Kurt Browning brought unexpected comfort and encouragement that helped her regain hope.
Managing diabetes proved challenging. Initial treatment with metformin caused severe side effects, and later medications either stopped working or led to dangerous weight loss. After further testing in July 2019, Karen learned she was actually living with type 1 diabetes. She began insulin therapy, gained back the weight she had lost, and finally started feeling better. Although she has two diaversaries, it is her type 1 diagnosis that brought clarity and proper treatment.
Karen also lives with Raynaud’s, eczema, autism, and chronic joint pain, all of which affect how she manages her diabetes and daily life. Fatigue, misunderstandings, and financial stress are ongoing realities, and she is no longer able to work. Still, her experience has made her more resilient and confident in advocating for herself.
Outside of diabetes, Karen is a proud auntie, an avid baker and crafter, and a passionate community supporter. She has raised over $1,300 through advocacy work and enjoys using creativity to spread awareness. Karen is modeling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to show that while diabetes is difficult, it does not have to stop you from living a meaningful, connected life. She believes diabetes is part of her story, but it does not define her.
