CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes
A decade ago, I was stunned to be diagnosed with diabetes during a routine check-up, and my initial reaction was one of shame—I confided only in my husband, feeling as though I had somehow caused it. I later learned I wasn't alone in this feeling. Nearly 90% of people with type 1 diabetes and 70% with type 2 experience shame related to their diagnosis—barriers that can delay care and worsen outcomes.
Diabetes is relentless. It's a complex, 24/7 condition that impacts every part of a person's life—physically, emotionally and financially. But as President & CEO of Diabetes Canada, I've dedicated myself to changing the conversation, challenging stigma with the truth, and ensuring people with diabetes have a steady ally in their corner. We provide the tools, resources and advocacy that help people face the daily reality of diabetes with the knowledge and support to live well.
That's why I am once again stepping (far) outside my comfort zone to model in the Toronto Pump Couture Fashion Show on June 15, 2026—proudly wearing my diabetes technology and standing alongside others living with the condition. Together, we're raising awareness, celebrating our community, and building a more informed, supported and resilient community.
Join me in reaching my fundraising goal of $10,000, because no one should have to be resilient alone.
Thank you to my supporters!
