CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes
Marlo was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 23 years old, a moment that felt overwhelming and sudden. She left the hospital with prescriptions in hand and very little understanding of what diabetes truly was, knowing immediately that managing it would now be her responsibility alone. While frightening, that realization became a turning point and taught her to advocate for herself and her future.
Early on, Marlo searched for people living full lives with diabetes, looking for reassurance and hope. Over time, wearing diabetes devices became less about feeling exposed and more about strength and visibility. Seeing others with devices helped her feel less alone and inspired her to show up openly, knowing her visibility could help someone else feel seen.
Diabetes has strengthened Marlo’s ability to recognize the unseen challenges everyone carries. It hasn’t been easy, but over time she has rebuilt trust in her body, learning to see it not as something that failed her, but as something strong enough to carry her forward. Fashion has always been a form of self-expression for Marlo, and one year after her diagnosis, she pursued her dream by attending fashion school in Italy. She later earned a Master’s degree in Fashion Business and moved to London to work in fashion trend forecasting. Marlo believes diabetes is challenging, but it does not define you—and sharing your journey can inspire others to keep moving forward.
