CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes

Casey was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) at just 10 months old, after a terrifying bout of severe DKA that required an emergency airlift from Weyburn, SK to Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital in Saskatoon. He spent four days in the ICU, and the day of his diagnosis is one his family will never forget. His diagnosis reshaped their expectations of parenthood, but they are deeply grateful he is here today and for the technology that helps manage his care.

Because Casey is still so young, he cannot recognize or communicate his highs and lows, so his family must stay vigilant as blood sugar changes can appear suddenly. He also doesn’t always understand why he needs to stop playing for blood checks, snacks, or insulin adjustments, which can be frustrating for him. Managing insulin while he grows so quickly brings its own challenges. T1D has made his family more mindful of the foods they bring into their home and more aware of how different foods affect the body.

Despite everything he faces, Casey has shown a level of maturity beyond his two years. He is a big farm boy at heart—happiest riding in the tractor, feeding cows, hauling bales, riding the side-by-side, or playing outside. He is also an incredible big brother.

Casey’s story is a reminder that you will find your new normal. Diabetes doesn’t get easier, but you get stronger, more confident, and better at managing it—and one day, it truly will feel easier.
