CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes

Michael was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in Grade 7, just twelve days before his birthday. He remembers lying in his hospital bed on the second day, realizing that insulin would be part of his life forever. That moment marked a major shift, as diabetes quickly became a constant part of his daily routine.

Living with T1D has meant regularly educating others and correcting common misconceptions, which can be frustrating. Over time, however, diabetes has become part of Michael’s identity in a meaningful way. It has helped him develop empathy and understand that everyone carries their own challenges, whether visible or not.

Shortly after his diagnosis, Michael attended diabetes camp. His first year made him feel incredibly normal and supported. While his second year was more difficult due to a loss of independence in managing his care, the experience ultimately helped him take pride in the autonomy he later reclaimed.

Today, Michael manages his diabetes with confidence. He is an optimistic government and economic management student who aspires to one day become Premier of Ontario. Diabetes is part of his life, but it does not define or limit his goals.
