CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes
Marcelle was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) at age 11, and everything changed fast. She had never been in the hospital before, so the experience felt scary and unfamiliar. She remembers being extremely weak and hearing words like ketones and insulin without understanding what they meant. Her blood sugar was 30 at diagnosis, and when she was told she had T1D, she was worried. Over time, she adjusted and learned how to live with diabetes.
One of her biggest challenges now is managing diabetes at school. She feels embarrassed when her alarms go off in class, and she doesn’t like leaving the room. She also finds it hard when people confuse T1D with type 2 diabetes (T2D), and she’s often placed in the position of explaining the difference.
Marcelle says diabetes has helped her grow into someone stronger and braver. She loves sports, dance, and wrestling. She is also a black belt in taekwondo after eight years of training, and she looks up to Tate McRae as a role model who inspires her to push through hard days.
Her message is hopeful. Even when it feels like the end of the world, it will get better.
