CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes

Brooklyn was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) on her fifth birthday. She remembers feeling tired and sick, and she did not even want to eat cake that day. What should have been a joyful celebration became the start of a new and unexpected chapter.

One of Brooklyn’s biggest challenges is not always being able to have treats when her friends can. If her blood sugar is high or the carbohydrate amount is unknown, she sometimes has to miss out. Sports can also be challenging. If Brooklyn is low, she may need to take a break from playing. While this can be frustrating, she is getting more used to it and learning how to manage those moments with confidence.

Living with diabetes has taught Brooklyn how to listen to her body and respond to what it needs, whether that is insulin or sugar. She has also learned something important about herself. She can do hard things.

Brooklyn is unique because she is only ten years old and is already incredibly responsible. She describes herself as brave like a dolphin and loves trying new things. Her courage shows through in the way she manages diabetes while still being a kid and living fully.

Brooklyn is modeling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to raise awareness and show that diabetes does not take away joy, bravery, or possibility. Her message to anyone newly diagnosed is kind and reassuring. Do not worry. You will get through it. It will be okay, and it will get easier with time.
