CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes
Charlotte was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) when she was three years old. At the time, she felt scared and confused and did not understand why everything was changing so quickly or why she suddenly needed pokes so often. Like many young children diagnosed with diabetes, Charlotte had to learn a whole new routine before she was old enough to fully understand what it meant.
One of Charlotte’s biggest challenges is how diabetes can interrupt the fun. She does not like having to stop playing when her blood sugar is low, and she especially dislikes when she needs an insulin pump site change and everyone else gets to keep going. She also really does not like waiting to eat, especially when other kids can eat right away without thinking about it.
Even with those challenges, Charlotte is learning and growing every day. Living with T1D has made her more responsible, and it has even helped her become better at math. She is learning skills that many kids her age never have to practice, and she is building confidence through each step.
Outside of diabetes, Charlotte is full of personality and joy. She loves flamingos, sports, and especially dance. She brings energy, fun, and determination into everything she does.
Charlotte is modeling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to raise awareness, challenge stigma, and support D-Camps. Her message to others is sweet, funny, and hopeful. It is going to be okay, and sometimes you even get candy when no one else does.
