CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes
Hartley is proudly living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and brings her story forward as a reminder of the strength that grows through community, representation, and shared experience. While her diagnosis and early journey may look familiar to many, Hartley’s perspective today is shaped by confidence, connection, and a deep belief in showing up as her full self.
Living with diabetes has taught Hartley adaptability and self-awareness. Like many people with diabetes, she balances daily management with school, activities, and relationships. Over time, she has learned how to navigate these responsibilities while building independence and confidence in her care.
Hartley has attended D-Camps, an experience that played a meaningful role in her journey. Being surrounded by other kids living with diabetes helped her feel understood and supported in ways that everyday life does not always allow. Meeting peers and role models who share similar experiences reinforced that she is not alone and that life with diabetes can be full, active, and empowering. She would absolutely recommend D-Camps to other kids living with diabetes.
Hartley believes that visibility matters. While she continues to grow in confidence, she understands how seeing diabetes represented openly helps challenge stigma and encourages understanding. By participating in Pump Couture, she sees an opportunity to help change how diabetes is talked about and perceived.
Hartley is modeling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to support other kids living with diabetes and to show that confidence grows through connection, courage, and community.
