CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes
Lilly-Anna remembers feeling overwhelmed after her diagnosis of type 1 diabetes (T1D). She felt different and unsure of where she fit, as though she no longer matched what society considered “normal.” In those early days, diabetes felt isolating and heavy, and she struggled to see herself reflected in the world around her.
Everything changed when Lilly-Anna attended her first diabetes youth camp. For the first time, she saw that she was not alone in her journey. Being surrounded by others who understood her experiences helped her realize that it is okay to be different. That sense of community and belonging became a turning point in how she viewed herself and life with diabetes.
One of Lilly-Anna’s biggest challenges is managing frequent low blood sugar levels. Although she often hides how difficult it can be, lows can be frustrating and disruptive to her daily routine. They require constant attention and adjustment, even on days when she just wants life to move forward without interruption.
Living with T1D has helped Lilly-Anna become more resilient and has shaped her character in countless ways. Through the challenges, she has learned strength, adaptability, and perseverance, qualities that continue to guide her as she grows.
Outside of diabetes, Lilly-Anna is deeply passionate about horses, reading, and spending time outdoors. She loves hiking and being surrounded by nature, and she has recently begun the journey toward becoming a published author with a children’s book she wrote herself. Creativity, curiosity, and connection to the world around her are central to who she is.
Lilly-Anna is modeling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to show others that while diabetes can feel overwhelming at first, it truly does get better. Her message to anyone newly diagnosed is simple and heartfelt. Do not stay in your bubble. Find your diabetes community, lean into support, and know that you are never alone.
