CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes

Sarah was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) at the age of 28. At the time, her world shifted quickly as she learned to adapt to a new reality and a lifelong condition. Like many adults diagnosed later in life, Sarah had to navigate not only the physical demands of diabetes, but also the emotional weight of understanding what this diagnosis meant for her future.

Living with diabetes presents daily challenges, both visible and invisible. From managing blood sugar levels to balancing energy, emotions, and responsibilities, diabetes requires constant attention. Through it all, Sarah has built resilience and strength, learning to advocate for herself and prioritize her health every day.

One of the most meaningful parts of Sarah’s life is her role as a mother. As a single parent, her son Malaki is her greatest motivation and source of strength. Living with diabetes has reinforced her determination to show up fully for her family while modeling perseverance, confidence, and self-care.

Sarah believes strongly in the power of visibility and education. She feels comfortable being publicly visible as a person living with diabetes and understands how representation can help challenge stigma and change how diabetes is understood. By participating in events like Pump Couture, she sees an opportunity to actively shape a more informed and compassionate conversation.

Sarah is modeling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to raise awareness and to remind others that living with diabetes is not a limitation. Her message to anyone newly diagnosed is simple and reassuring. It may feel overwhelming at first, but you are capable, supported, and never alone.
