CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes
Anette was diagnosed with diabetes in 2019 after her family doctor recommended an annual check-up and routine blood work. Before her diagnosis, she truly believed she would age gracefully without any major medical concerns, so the news came as an unexpected shock. In the beginning, Anette felt deeply sad and struggled to accept the changes diabetes brought to her life. She found herself in denial, and at times felt depressed as she adjusted to a new reality.
Even as she made changes to her diet and increased her daily activity, Anette still experienced blood sugar fluctuations throughout the day. Some days, those highs and lows left her feeling lethargic or unwell, making it difficult to maintain her usual routine and energy.
A major turning point came when Anette began using a continuous glucose monitor. At first, she was nervous. She could not imagine wearing a device on her body at all times and worried about how it would feel and how it would change her day-to-day life. With the encouragement and support of her husband, her daughter, and her grandchildren, she took a leap of faith and tried it.
That decision changed everything. Using a continuous glucose monitor gave Anette her confidence back and helped her feel empowered in managing her health. It allowed her to return to the activities she loves, including working out, attending Cardio Zumba classes, visiting family and friends, shopping, and participating in church and community events. Most importantly, it has helped her continue spending quality time with her two active grandchildren, Alexx and Ava, who bring so much joy to her life.
Anette has worked in commercial real estate for many years and is proud to continue moving forward with a focus on health, balance, and a positive outlook. She has also proudly participated in the Pump Couture Fashion Show in Vancouver in both 2023 and 2024, supporting Diabetes Canada’s mission and helping raise awareness in her community.
Anette is modeling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to remind others that a diabetes diagnosis does not mean life must be lived with limitations. Her message is simple and hopeful. People living with diabetes can still live a full, active, and normal life.
