CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes

Silvie’s life took a sudden turn when she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) at the age of seven. The diagnosis was devastating for her and her family, and everything about daily life began to feel unfamiliar. It was not until four months later, during her first visit to D-Camp, that Silvie began to feel a sense of acceptance and belonging in her new reality.

Living with diabetes requires constant attention, and while Silvie faces these challenges with resilience, there are moments that feel especially difficult. When strangers ask questions about her medical devices, she can feel singled out or different. She also wishes she could enjoy eating without having to count carbohydrates or think about insulin, something many of her friends never have to consider.

Alongside diabetes management, Silvie is an active and determined athlete. She is a competitive cheerleader and has recently fallen in love with playing hockey. Participating in sports means taking extra precautions to stay safe and balanced, but it has never stopped her from showing up with enthusiasm and commitment. Silvie is especially proud of the growing independence she has gained in managing her diabetes.

Being part of the Pump Couture Fashion Show brings Silvie immense joy. The event allows her to support fundraising efforts for D-Camps and to help educate others about living with T1D. What makes the experience most meaningful for her, however, is the chance to connect with others who truly understand her journey.

Silvie often reflects on her first experience at D-Camp, where she formed lifelong friendships and felt understood in ways that even her parents could not fully grasp. That sense of community helped her realize she was not alone, and it continues to inspire her today.

Silvie is modeling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to show that while diabetes comes with challenges, it does not limit who she is or what she can achieve. She dreams of one day becoming a dietitian to help kids living with T1D and hopes her story encourages others to feel confident, supported, and proud of who they are.
