CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes

Adeline was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) at just two and a half years old. She was too young to remember much from that time, but her parents often share how overwhelming it felt. With a baby brother only six months old and very little knowledge about diabetes, her family was suddenly navigating a new and uncertain world. Thankfully, strong support systems helped them through those early and challenging days.

Today, Adeline continues to manage diabetes with strength and self-awareness. While she is grateful for the support she receives at school, there are times when it can feel overwhelming. Having someone constantly monitoring or directing her can make her feel like she has little space to be independent. Another challenge she faces is managing her emotions when her blood sugar levels are not in range, something that can affect her mood and energy in ways others may not always understand.

Living with diabetes has shown Adeline that the world can be a tough place and that things that seem easy for others often require extra effort and planning for people with T1D. At the same time, it has made her stronger. Diabetes has taught her how to advocate for herself, use her voice, and communicate clearly when situations feel difficult or unfair.

Outside of diabetes, Adeline loves playing basketball and being active. She is also a performer and was proud to take part in her divisional musical this year, completing eight shows in just one week. These experiences highlight her determination, confidence, and ability to rise to challenges.

Adeline is modeling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to help raise awareness and show what life with diabetes really looks like. Her message to kids who are newly diagnosed is to never be afraid to ask for support. For those supporting someone with diabetes, she encourages learning the details, asking questions, and listening. She believes that understanding and communication make a meaningful difference.
