CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes
Delveen was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) on August 10, 2022. At first, the diagnosis was scary, and the grieving period was hard for both Delveen and her mom. Delveen worried she would no longer be able to enjoy the foods she loved, and the emotional weight of the change left her feeling depressed. Over time, however, it became more manageable, and she began to find her confidence again.
In her spare time, Delveen enjoys listening to music, singing, reading, drawing, watching movies, and practicing boxing. She is creative, expressive, and full of energy. One of the challenges she faces is having to stop and treat low blood sugar when she is deeply engaged in something she loves. Delveen also lives with ADHD and ODD, which adds another layer to her daily life and makes routine and focus even more important.
Delveen wants people to understand that those living with diabetes are normal people. They just need a bit of help because their bodies process sugar differently. She appreciates the support of diabetes technology, which helps reduce the amount of constant mental math required each day. Being able to enter carbohydrates and have the system help manage insulin and corrections has made a meaningful difference in her independence and confidence.
Delveen’s message is simple and reassuring. It gets easier. She encourages anyone newly diagnosed to grieve as much as they need to and to remember there is no timeline for when they should feel ready. When the time comes, they will find their rhythm again.
Delveen is passionate about raising awareness for people living with diabetes and has attended diabetes camp, where she tried new activities, met others living with T1D, and learned tips and tricks for managing diabetes. Camp helped her build confidence and independence, and it reminded her that she is not alone.
One of Delveen’s proudest moments was attending a Taylor Swift concert in Vancouver. She planned ahead, managed her blood sugar carefully, and dosed for the snacks and food at the concert. Even with all the excitement, singing, and energy, she proved to herself that she can live fully and still manage diabetes well.
Delveen is modeling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to raise awareness, challenge stigma, and show that living with diabetes does not take away joy, independence, or the ability to chase unforgettable experiences.
