CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes

Elena was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) on Boxing Day when she was six years old. Like many children diagnosed at a young age, Elena’s world changed quickly, and she had to learn new routines and responsibilities that most kids her age never have to think about.

One of Elena’s biggest challenges is the day-to-day work of managing diabetes. Measuring food, keeping track of what she eats, and dealing with low blood sugar levels can be frustrating and exhausting, especially when she just wants to be a kid and enjoy the moment.

Living with T1D has helped Elena grow in powerful ways. It has made her more independent, more mature, and more aware of her body. Over time, she has learned that diabetes may require extra planning, but it does not take away her ability to live fully.

Outside of diabetes, Elena has a creative side. She loves making origami, and she especially loves monkeys. Her personality shines through in the little things she enjoys, and she brings curiosity and fun into the world around her.

Elena attended D-Camps and describes it as a great experience. She had fun, made new friends, and got to spend time with others who understand what living with diabetes is like.

Elena is modeling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to raise awareness, challenge stigma, and support D-Camps. Her message is simple and honest. Do not sneak snacks, and remember that learning how to manage diabetes gets easier with time.
