CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes

Amelia was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) when she was three years old, and she is now five. Her diagnosis was life changing for her family as they learned how to support her while still helping her feel like a normal kid. The finger pokes, medical device changes, and insulin routines meant Amelia had to grow up faster than she should have. Even at a young age, she has taken it upon herself to learn as much as she can about why her body is different.

Amelia’s biggest challenge right now is managing blood sugar levels that can feel like a constant rollercoaster. Frequent lows can mean missing out on some activities, especially at school, where it can be difficult to keep up with her vibrant energy.

What stands out most about Amelia is her awareness and confidence. She knows when her insulin pump or phone alerts someone, and she understands that it means something is happening in her body. She stays calm and knows that mom, dad, or another caregiver will check what is going on, whether it is a high or a low. Watching her respond with knowledge and steadiness is something her family finds incredible.

Amelia dreams of becoming a scientist one day so she can help find a cure for diabetes. She also loves going to Palm Springs with her Momo and Papa, which she describes as her favourite place to relax and soak up the sunshine. She loves hot weather and thrives outdoors.

Amelia’s message to anyone newly diagnosed is hopeful and reassuring. It gets easier. At the start, it can feel overwhelming and impossible, but the answer is yes, you can do this. Diabetes adds extra responsibilities, but it does not take away what you are capable of.

Amelia is modelling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to help raise awareness and show that even the youngest kids living with diabetes are brave, capable, and full of possibility.
