CHANGING THE CONVERSATION for People Living With Diabetes
Lenaee was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (T1D) when she was just two and a half years old. One of her earliest memories is surprisingly specific. She remembers learning that she could no longer have brown sugar on her oatmeal. That small moment captures what so many people living with diabetes experience. Everyday routines change, often in ways others may not notice.
One of Lenaee’s biggest challenges has been navigating public misunderstanding, especially the confusion between type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Over the years, she has heard many misconceptions, including being told that she could “cure” her diabetes with cinnamon. Instead of reacting with frustration, Lenaee used the moment as an opportunity to educate. She was also grateful to have a close friend step in and help explain the difference.
Living with diabetes has shaped Lenaee into a strong and independent woman. She often reflects on her dad’s words, who used to say, “You can do anything you put your mind to, but make sure you have a benefits plan.” That humour and honesty reflect the way Lenaee approaches life. She is successful, resilient, and has never let diabetes get in her way.
Lenaee has lived with diabetes for 51 years and has every intention of living another 50. She believes diabetes should never be allowed to take over a person’s identity or their joy. Her advice is both real and uplifting. Allow yourself to feel sorry for yourself one day a year, and then move forward. Do not let diabetes rule your life. Live as fully as you can.
D-Camps were an important part of Lenaee’s childhood. Being diagnosed so young, she did not know any other kids living with diabetes. At camp, she met lifelong friends and made some of her favourite memories. Camp helped her realize she was not alone.
Lenaee is modeling in the Pump Couture Fashion Show to help change the conversation around diabetes and remind others that life with diabetes can still be full, joyful, and limitless.
